Occupational and environmental factors have a major impact on community health. Yunlin's Petrochemical plants in Yulin poses a high cancer risk to the nearby public. Stoneworkers in Hualien suffer from pneumoconiosis. In Mazu, tourism is an important industry, ergonomic hazards in the hotel industry may cause musculoskeletal diseases. In Taiwan, the department of labor has established 10 occupational health service centers to provide worker’s service. However, the service is still lacking for workers in Mazu. To integrate the occupational health service in primary care is then supported by the WHO/ILO to provide the basic occupational health service for workers in small industries. To maintain a good quality of drinking water is important for residents and tourists. Mazu is close to mainland China, the air quality might be influenced by industry on the other side of the strait. To assess the hazards in a community, it is necessary to systemically evaluate the physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards in a community. An integrated local occupational environmental health service center is necessary to provide a sustainable service for workers and residents. With good cooperation between NTU school of public and the Mazu health bureau, Mazu is able to establish a sustainable model of healthy and happy city in the world.
