Oral cancer disproportionately affects Asians, accounting for 11% of cancer deaths in Asia compared to 5% in the rest of the world. As the majority of cases are diagnosed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where expertise and healthcare resources are limited, innovative and cost-effective ways to promote early detection of oral cancer is critical to improve survival of patients with this disease. High and increasing use of mobile phones in LMICs presents an opportunity to use mobile health (mHealth) to facilitate early detection of oral cancer. In my talk, I will be sharing our experience in working within multi-disciplinary teams to use a mobile phone application in the early detection of oral cancer in Malaysia.
