Good People: in hon of John
A poem in tribute to John Njoroge Michuki
By Maurice Maina
You did your part
Without envy to the share of your neighbor
You always transcended
That’s why we took it for granted
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
It was not all about you
But it was for all of us
What we saw were your steel structures
They signaled immortality
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
We tended to forget
The passion
That made it possible
Your sense of duty
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
Where we had lost hope
You gladly provided insight
Though we doubted
The power within
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
You showed us the value of humility
Even when the adversary poked our noses
We should have known
It was all about us
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
To fulfill Justice for humanity
When you said it
We couldn’t appreciate
What we should have
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
We knew you will keep it
You did it time and again
Until we were convinced
We should have known: That we can
But now we know
It’s why we believe.
