Week 2 - Lecturer: Dr Usha Sridhar
Five number Summary: Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max
Sridhar (2016) advises that learning the Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max helps to recognize Symmetry in data in different situations such as if the distance from Min to Median equals the distance from the Median to Max, and if the distance from Min to Q1 equals the distance from Q3 to Max. This also helps to recognize Asymmetry in data such as left skewed distributions, and Right skewed distributions.
Display of data using box-plots and analysis
Boxplots are useful for comparing multiple distributions
Comparing box-plots - Boxplots and other displays are to
-help to compare distributions of sets of data
-visually effective
-the quantitative comparison is possible when Mean, Standard deviation, IQR( Inter-Quartile Range) are included in the diagram
-check if any outliers are present
-analyse the comparisons
