TAKE ACTION. CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS.
Voting is a critical way for citizens to tell lawmakers what we want, but it's not the only way. Contacting our representatives directly empowers each of us with another chance to let them know what matters to us and to share unique perspectives and valuable knowledge that legislators need to make informed decisions.
WHATS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT THEM?
Phone Call.
This is the fastest way to reach your elected reps. You will probably speak to a staffer or need to leave a message. If the rep has multiple offices, call them all!
Email.
Most legislators have a “Contact Me” tab on their website, which can take you right to their email portal. This will also give you their office phone numbers and mailing address.
Snail Mail.
If this is your comfort zone, go for it! The address should be on their website.
Listening sessions/town halls.
Watch the LWV Winnebago County FB page or the representative’s FB page for dates, locations, and times of these great opportunities to connect, face to face.
TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS
Give your name and address so you are identified as a constituent. Be sure to include your zip code, as this is important tracking information for the rep’s office staff.
It’s best to address only one issue for each call. Be clear and concise. Here’s a sample:
“My name is ____, and my address is _____. I’m calling about ______. I want (Elected’s name) to_____. This issue is important to me because _______.” You can add more info, but realize that if you are talking to a staffer, they are likely indicating the topic and if you are for or against.
Don’t be discouraged if your representative doesn’t change their position. It’s important that they know how their constituents feel. But, if they hear from enough constituents, maybe they will make a change. And don’t be afraid to call, email, and write. It’s your responsibility as a citizen!
