Assignment Summary
Each student will create a webpage (linked to LT130 in your ePortfolio) to present a troubleshooting checklist for basic technical problems for at least two pieces of equipment in a library. Include the checklist steps to take before calling the person(s) on the library staff with the most information technology expertise or the library’s IT department. If you work in a library, share the checklist with other staff in the library and revise based on their suggestions. If not, share with your blog mates and ask for comments and suggestions.
Reflection
Troubleshooting technology will be one of our most important responsibilities as library technicians. This process can be frustrating, often with little guidance and support provided. That will make resolving the issues even more difficult, but the good news is that many problems that arise have likely been reported in the past and as long as there are documented steps to follow to resolve a problem, problems can be fixed. I chose two common technical issues libraries experience: printer problems and Wi-Fi issues. I created a Google Site laying out the procedures and strategies for each of these issues and provided other resources to elaborate on my instructions. I tried to design it to be clear cut and succinct so it can help fix issues when they arise.
Like my other assignments, I tried to design the site with the audience in mind: a library technician or staffer. This meant looking beyond the library setting and researching guides and resources for resolving these issues. This assignment was a good lesson in developing solutions. It allowed me to become familiar with the resolution process, which can be passed down to other members of the library staff. I can now help create a Google Site or resource for local libraries.
