Assignment
For this assignment we were asked to choose one of the following;
Create a movie to explain to users how to access one of the library services remotely, such as databases, e-books, catalog, search engines, etc.OR
Create a movie to describe three kinds of information that a library user could find using each of the following library discovery tools: library catalog, email interaction with library staff, library databases, library web site and one other information discovery tool of your choice. Explain how a user may obtain assistance or training to use the service.
Then we had to convert the powerpoint into a movie or make a movie using iMovie. I chose to make a powerpoint and then convert it into a movie.

This assignment taught us an important skill and program: Microsoft PowerPoint. It also gave me an opportunity to help patrons understand and utilize subscription databases. We will be giving assistance at the help desk in a library on a daily basis. Patrons will come in asking questions about library resources and we need to provide answers in a way that’s helpful and not condescending or “telling them what to do”, including what’s available and how they can utilize them for the benefit of their academic experience. Equally important is helping a patron learn how to research their topics on their own. This will help them focus on the subjects they are interested in, and it will free up our time to help others at the library.
We were instructed to offer critiques on our group's presentations. This taught us how to provide constructive criticism, which we will use when developing and brainstorming library policies with our co-workers. This also helped improve on our own presentations. We should be in a perpetual state of improvement, asking ourselves the question: How can we do this better and serve the needs of patrons?
My goal going forward is to think of other topics for PowerPoints and ways to implement them in library settings for the benefit of patrons.
I chose Palomar College’s subscription databases. Students are some of the most frequent patrons to utilize databases and peer-reviewed journals for research and completing assignments. I felt this resource would be most useful to them.
