To the Library Management:
I am submitting my application for the position of Library Assistant at the Oceanside Public Library, which I saw posted on the library website. I feel that I am qualified for this position and would welcome a chance to discuss my qualifications with you in person, as well as discuss how I could help the library achieve its goal of supporting our local community.
Through a combination of education and job experience, I have demonstrated an ability to use my knowledge of library public services procedures to do accurate and efficient work. I have received my (list the title of the degree or certification) from the Palomar College Library Information and Technology Program. I volunteered as a library assistant at an Oceanside elementary school as part of a service-learning project. This project included giving back to the community in a meaningful and positive way. My responsibilities included helping the librarian run the day to day operations, which included managing the collection on the shelves and in the databases, providing resources requested by students, and assisting teachers with videos and books to be used to teach their classes. I even created the library’s mission statement after interviewing the librarian on the libraries’ goals and objectives.
The public library system’s primary goal is to serve the community by having as many patrons access the library services as possible. I pride myself on being a “people person”, which would help me to connect with the library patrons. While pursuing my BA in Political Science at Sonoma State University, I was a twice-elected senator in the student government, working with both the student body and faculty towards common goals. I have worked as a volunteer and an office manager on a variety of political campaigns, most recently for State Assemblymember Tasha Boerner-Horvath. Working with other volunteers and office staff towards the common goal of getting the candidate elected, helped me to hone my communication and organization skills, both of which I feel would help me as a Library Assistant. I gained a reputation as a “data guy” for all the work that I did training volunteers and solving problems with voter data software programs for a variety of political campaigns.
Through taking classes at the Palomar Library Information and Technology program, I have learned about troubleshooting equipment, creating a Google Site to teach other people how to use the equipment, I learned how to create other visual features of libraries like display boards and presentations, all designed to help patrons navigate throughout the physical library and to encourage them to return for future visits. What I learned from the Palomar program I would like to implement and enhance at the Oceanside libraries.
I am a highly innovative, motivated, and enthusiastic person. I look forward to a time in the near future when I could meet with you in person and take the next step in the application process.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Luke Tesluk
