Reflection

Libraries need to utilize videos to promote literacy and digital skills. Videos are a prevalent form of communication in the age of YouTube. It is important for us to be able to create videos and convey information effectively. An important part of this tool is understanding your message and audience. This project required me to think like a patron, assessing their existing knowledge in this area. I realized many of them are not aware of these resources. I had to make a video that was succinct and made the information easy to understand.

It’s defining features of this medium that makes it successful. Initially, I converted my PowerPoint into a video only to realize several of the features wouldn’t work in a video. I wanted to include music so it would be engaging. I had recorded narration which wouldn’t be cohesive with music. I opted to remove the narration in favor of music. It's important our videos are memorable, stand out, and convey the information to patrons. We are living in the age of the short attention span, which means a smaller window for reaching people. There are also countless videos out there which means ours have to be memorable and stand out. If someone watched a mediocre video, there’s a good chance they won’t visit the library website a second time. These videos are our chance to leave an impression and impart important skills. When I uploaded the video to YouTube, I realized it wasn’t just a matter of posting a video. I had to include an important context and information. That way people would know what they were watching and have a background prior to clicking play.

One goal I have is to continue making videos on library resources while helping patron’s awareness and knowledge of these topics.
