I have been working on pianos since I was in high school. At first I bought very old pianos for cheap and fixed them up using only rudimentary tools and no training. Later on I had the privilege of restoring an upright grand piano under the supervision of a retired piano technician. In recent years I have invested in proper piano tools and done a lot of reading on the subject. I also have a friend who is a certified piano technician and who has given me good advice over the years. This has been and will probably always remain for me a hobby. I don't wish to take business away from any individual who works on pianos for a living, but I do end up working on 3 - 5 pianos a year. Since I don't tune pianos regularly enough to keep a good ear for it, I mainly use piano tuning software in the process.
If you are wondering how old your piano is, you can look up the serial number here.
I have created some sub-pages of reference material that I use from time to time.
