Lit 01

Aesop was supposedly a slave in ancient Greece. The stories say he lived around 600 BC, and he liked to tell stories that had a moral, or lesson, at the end. Nobody knows if he really existed, though, and people are pretty sure that even if he did exist, he didn't write all the stories people say he did.

We're going to read some of the most famous of Aesop's Tales. These are all stories that are so well-known that people refer to them, or even just parts of them (like the moral) and expect you to understand the whole story. Sometimes, for example, people will say, "Oh, that's just sour grapes!"--and they expect you to understand the story they're referring to (we'll get to that one in a few days).

Today's fable, or tale, is "Belling the Cat."
