by Mary Shelley
The legend of Frankenstein is one of the most gruesome stories ever imagined. This giant monster is made out of body parts stolen from the graveyard, sewn together by a mad scientist in a laboratory, and is brought to life by electricity
The story of Frankenstein was written at a time when scientists were making huge discoveries with electricity. Luigi Galvani had just discovered that our brains sent electric signals to tell our bodies what to do. Scientists everywhere started experimenting with electricity, brains and bodies, including some very gruesome practices.
Mary Shelley was only 18 years old when she wrote Frankenstein in 1816. She got her ideas from the news about scientists stealing bodies from graveyards to try bring them back to life. She dreamed about these stories, but in these dreams the scientist actually brought the dead corpse back to life. She told her dreams as stories to people, including her boyfriend Percy. Percy encouraged her to write her story on paper and it was so good that they transformed it into one of the greatest novels ever written.

It’s important to note that Frankenstein was actually the mad scientist and not the monster. It was only later when the monster was seen and used in many stories without the scientist that the monster became named “Frankenstein”.
