The Eiffel Tower means Paris. Six million tourists visit it every year. What is its story? There was a big fair in the late 1880s. It celebrated new inventions. The fair's managers wanted something special for the fair. They chose Gustave Eiffel's idea for a tower of iron. The Eiffel Tower became the tallest building in the world. It was 320 meters high! Only the Pyramids were taller. Eiffel was a French engineer. He didn't actually design the tower, but workers in his company designed and built it from 18,038 separate pieces.
But some people didn't like the tower. They said that it was ugly. There was even a joke. People asked, "Why do you get the best view of Paris from the Eiffel Tower?" The answer was, "Because you can't see the Eiffel Tower." But the visitors to the fair loved the tower. They loved the view from the top. And the ride to the top in the elevators was exciting.
