The data sheet number (ds#) most commonly identifies a significant piece of hardware in a process plant, or in a discrete object manufacturing facility like an auto assemly plant or such. A typical data sheet might exist for say #tcv02 (Temperature Control Valve no 2).
However since most hardware is a single component of a larger assembly - the next levels up (and down) may also have ds#'s, perhaps a system ds# like #cws01 (Cold Water System no 1) may be necessary therefore to concatenate ds#'s . The above valve may need to be expressed as #cws01#tcv02 - as there could be #tcv02's on other system - whether or not they were cold water.)
In this case data sheet #tcv02 would indicate the existance of a "parent data sheet <key code: pds>" #cws01.
The # is used to highlight the fact that this item is a potentially complex object with perhaps dozens of parameters that need to be defined for proper and safe use. It probabaly also requires maintenance and a history record show what and when operations were done to it and who did them
