The pizza delivery problem.
I often give impromptu word problems to my class based on interesting daily events in my life. These the most realistic as they actually happen to me and students can easily relate to them (R type problems, as per my own published research) Here is an example of such a problem, based on an event which actually happened to me the previous Saturday night while ordering pizza. The problem requires the knowledge of areas the students did two weeks ago to successfully solve . Another feature about these problems are that they are presented as they are, usually with missing (and extra) data so the students need to Google and find the missing data (In this case they had to find the radii of the Pizza Hut large and Medium Pizzas, and in this problem, the price of the deal is not important for the solution))
Incorrect dosage and half life time problem.
"Let the Dog Roam" problem
This is an intriguing problem (Falling into the "I" category of problem in my word problem research) which is given under the "Arc Length" section of Trigonometry .
“The basketball free throw problem”
During my research on word problems, sports related problems often fell in to the “R” category consisting of problems that students can easily relate to. Ctrl+Click here o see such a problem based on right angled triangles which was given to my Trigonometry class.
