In 2016 I took the initiative to create a mathematics reading circle. On study day December 15, the UW Colleges staff members who participated in the 2016 Disciplinary reading circle had an excellent math reading circle discussion via Business Skype. These reading circles used VTLC grants to support it.
2016 Disciplinary Reading Circle on "Mathematical classroom discussions"
The mathematics staff members Roger Peterson. Laurie Sloma, Wufeng Tian, Trudi Wesemann, Brian Murphy, David Schudson, Ed Stredulinsky, Paul Martin, Kavita Bhatia, Kirthi Premadasa, Meg Onoda, Sunita Mehrota and Kayle Hertz joined the Mathematics department disciplinary reading circle 2016. The book that was used for the reading was: “5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions “by Smith and Stein (from NCTM). The purchase of the books was supported by the VTLC disciplinary reading circle grant applied and obtained by Kirthi premadasa as well as by the math department PD funds. 2017 Disciplinary Reading Circle on mathematical mindsets. (VTLC grant)
In 2017 I continued the initiative I took for creating a disciplinary reading circle for mathematics by obtaining a second VTLC disciplinary reading circle in 2017 and conducting as second reading circle on Jo Boaler’s book on mathematical mindsets, which had 13 members of the department participating.
2018 (Planned) Disciplinary Reading circle
In October 2017, I obtained a third VTLC disciplinary reading circle to conduct a third reading circle.
