Lesson 1 - Animate Your Name

Welcome to the Scratch Club!

Today we will animate our own names, then share and discuss our projects. It's a good way to learn each other's names and get familiar with Scratch: What is a Sprite, how do you create one, delete one and make it move.

Opening Circle:

- What is Scratch?

- What can you do with Scratch? Anybody tried it before? What have you created?

- Some examples:

- Owls https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/3296047/

- Lamby Dance - Animation https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/86869238

- JailBreak (maze) https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/50406044/

Activity:

- Animate Your Name tutorial: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tip_bar=madewithcode-name

- When you are done with the tutorial, you can copy from the Owls example some effects, or simply try different blocks under Looks. You can put scripts from the Owl example into your scratch backpack, then copy them into your own program.

- Here is an interesting example: this person made his own letters, taking the idea a step further: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/172191659/

- Here is an example of a person working way too hard: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/135763211/

Closing Circle:

- Share our projects

- Which ones did you like and why?

- Revisit Terminology: What is a sprite and what is a background, how to create and delete them, what can you do with them.

- Please feel free to log into your scratch account from home, and create something on your own. Perhaps select a sprite from the library, then make it do something surprising. Or just look at other people's projects and see which ones you like. We can talk about them next time.
