MAKERSPACE CLUB 2020 Spring - CANCELLED for the moment
K2-Grade 5
Tuesdays, 4:10-5:45 (March 31, 2020 - May 26) - postponed due to COVID
Instructor: Andrea Blake
Claymation, BeeBots and DigBots! The three best new things in makerspace club.
Claymation is a method of animation in which clay figures are filmed using stop-motion photography. Students in small teams design and create their own characters, backgrounds, story lines and movies. See our last year projects on YouTube: the Very Hungry Caterpillar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-kzklQUO_0 and Friendship Shorts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gKkPbwrPaA&feature=youtu.be
BeeBots are creating quite a buzz at school! Students love creating playmats and learning about sequencing while playing games like chutes and ladders and decoding secret messages with these adorable little robots. And this time they will get a chance to build a huge BEEHIVE for our BeeBots and learn about pollination and the life of bees.
DigBots and GrabberBots are lego based robots. Fun to build, program and control via the Jimu iPad App and even more fun to RACE! For Earth Day, students will enter their bots in a challenge to see who can pick up and sort the most items in our Recycle Arena.
Day 1 - Make a beehive for our BeeBots
Make a beehive for our beebots. Make a hexagon shaped cardboard container for each beebot then assemble a beehive
Program the beebots to go to flowers and “pollinate”, and later “collect” honey. Busy bees and pollination video. .

Day 4 - Marshmallow Giants & Digital Citizenship Week
The Science Behind Marshmallow Science : (video of marshmallow in microwave oven)
" Marshmallows are a whole lot of sugar, water and air bubbles. When you heat marshmallows in a microwave the water molecules vibrate very quickly which makes the water heat up. This in turn warms the sugar (causing it to soften) and warms the air in the bubbles.
Since the warm air is trapped in side of the marshmallow bubbles (think of those marshmallow bubbles like little balloons), the heated air molecules get excited and move around faster, pushing against the marshmallow walls. Since the warmed sugar is softened the hyperactive air molecules push and stretch the sugar. This makes it puff up.If it puffs up too much, some air bubbles burst, and the marshmallow ruptures. Once the marshmallow starts to cool it deflates like a popped balloon."
