Lego Club Fall 2018
“This year in Lego club we will continue with STEAM-inspired challenges, combining Lego with recycled materials, robotic elements and art.
We will explore new themes, such as utopia, space travel, astronomy, and how to turn your favorite movie into a lego movie. At times we will use ozobots and Lego WeDo to build simple robots, like Milo the space-rover. There will be time for a few of our old time favorites too: cars, boats, marble run and free build.”

Challenging your students to build a city out of their LEGO Bricks isn’t just a fun imagination game; doing so will give your students a deeper understanding of the world around them, and perhaps get them looking at the simplest city structures in a new way.
Make clear the task is not as simple as building a few houses. They have to think about what every city needs, as well as what most residents will want. They’ll have to make room for roads, trees, sidewalks, and all those other elements of city planning they probably take for granted every day without considering the fact that someone had to plan and build them. Not only will this give your students a new perspective, it will help them see the world as one big problem solving challenge — one they’re well equipped to solve.
Urban planning challenge: Learn project management skills and team work. How to break a large project into smaller tasks, assign a different part to build for each student and then assemble it into a large display.
Choices for today:
Create a piece of our urban land: design sidewalks, school, police station, fire station
Decorate our lego wall for Thanks Giving
Extras: - Note: We will cover this in the Makerspace club.
Rising Sea Levels in Boston:
Mayor Marty Walsh says city will spend big to battle future flooding—and it wants the private sector's help. Mayor Marty Walsh on October 17 announced a public-private initiative to protect 47 miles of Boston coastline from the effects of climate—in particular rising sea levels.
Day 8

City planning challenge
1. LEGO Bricks can teach students about counting and measuring.
For younger students, LEGO Bricks can be useful for covering some of the basics of learning numbers. Connect a bunch of LEGO Bricks and have your students count them one at a time. Make the exercise more interactive by challenging them to measure different items around the room (or themselves – how many bricks long is your arm?). If you write numbers onto your LEGO set, as in the example linked to above, you can help them learn numerals in the process.
Rules:
1. Snack. Clean Up
2. Meet on the Rug. Listen to the instructions. Do NOT touch the supplies yet.
3. Do NOT touch supplies on the long table under the big screen. Supervisors will move these to your table when it's time.
4. Make your project. Be SAFE: no running, ninja fighting. Be respectful and kind. Ask your table supervisor for help, before you ask Ms. Blake
5. Show and Tell
6. Clean Up
