About This Course

Course Description:An over view of computer concepts, with an introduction to hardware and software. Covering basic  computer concepts, binary derivative number systems, programming logic, operating systems, networking, and social, ethical and professional issues of computing. Students will be guided to look for and experience new technologies, and some popular software / applications will be introduced in the class. (Computer Science, Computer  Information Science and Mathematics majors)  

Text Book:

Computer Science Illuminated. 4th Edition. Nell Dale, John Lewis. Jones and Bartlett Publishers.

    2. Weekly schedule you should know (start from 8/23/2010):

        Every Monday: Individual lab hours: 

              - Online chat on http://scholar360.com/benedictcollege/ will be provided during the class hours to answer questions;

              - All students are required to participate in the chat;

              - Weekly assignment will due on Monday 11:59PM, and assignment for next week will be posted;

              - Available labs on campus are listed HERE.

        Every Wednesday: Lecture hours:

              - Check the schedule regularly for updated lectures.

              - Be in class on time, extra credit quiz will be assigned and due in 10 minutes at the beginning of the class.

        Every Friday: Group meeting time: Students will be separated as accountable learning groups.

              - Your group has flexibility to schedule your own regular meeting time;

              - Each group member need to submit a record for the meeting,  which includes Group number, your name, meeting date, time, attendee, and a brief description about your meeting content.

    3. NO late assignment will be accepted.

    4. All grades will be posted to http://scholar360.com/benedictcollege/. So make sure you have an account. You can contact Mr. Thomas Holmes (holmest @ benedict.edu) for any question about Scholar360. If you can not access it temporarily, you can click the schedule for recent ASSIGNMENTs. Evaluation

The Success Equals Effort (SE2) Grading Policy is in effect for all students enrolled in this course:  

    Grade = Effort (60%) +  Knowledge (40%),  

Where,  Effort = 40% * Homework + 40% * Attendance + 20% * Participation; Knowledge = 20% * Quizzes + 40% * Midterm + 40*Final exam  

Grading:

A= 90-100 B= 80-89 C= 70-79 D= 60-69 F= 0-59
