Although digital software can help in reading, writing is a vital skill in a language. When you learn new vocabulary, write it on a word card. Japanese stationery company Kokuyo makes small cards that are on a ring. These make it so easy to carry with you and review, since they are on a ring, you won't have to worry about your cards getting separated from one another.
My recommendation for learning kanji is to learn the meaning in your primary language, then focus on the readings in Japanese. This will get your reading comprehension to improve since you want to make sure that you understand, not that you can just sound out. So, what I do is write the English on one side, and the kanji on the other. The ring can be opened so, as you learn the words you can relocate them to the back where you won't see them too frequently.
Myndology are another company that are in the field of educational stationery, and they also make these small "flash cards"on a ring which are very practical. http://www.myndology.com/shop/ergo/ergo-small
