April 2014 to Jessica on Phone: They still use chemical flame retardants to meet federal safety mandates. They have voluntarily banned some of the worst flame retardants including Firemaster 550, tcep, tdbpp and tcpp. "We are committed to monitoring and removing these chemicals" They do not use 2-chlorathyl, tcep or chlorinated TRIS. They do not use any banned brominated flame retardants. The base of carseats are made from poly pro pylene. The straps are polyester. The foam is polystyrene and has no BFX (which is penta octa BDE). If you want to avoid PVC you'll want to avoid anything with a peek-a-boo window like the Snugride canopy.

Not tested by CR, but their article says how great it is that they allow rear facing longer for spine alignment and safety.
