Tip of the Arrowhead Update Page

We will be updating this page when reports of Tman Sitings come in.

See subpages below for daily updates.

I started out from Madison, Wisconsin at 9:45 am on Thurday, May 20

Wednesday, May 26 Update:

I was trying to make it out to the Arrowhead Trail last night but I didn't quite make it.

Instead I crashed at the John Lake Overlook about a mile from the Arrowhead Trail.

I stopped at the Grand Portage State Forest Campground and one of the fishermen there

took me down to Hovland. From Hovland, I hitched a ride from a Grand Portage Tribe

local resident named Ed, thank you. Right now I am at the Grand Marais Best Western.

I'm going to be resting up today and will do some day hiking over the next few days.

The last few days have been grueling. I pick record heat days to do my hike. I was

told it was in the 90's

Thursday, May 27 Update:

I've been taking it easy so far today. Last night I explored Grand Marais by hiking around

the downtown. I found Burger Night at the American Legion, it was good. My mom

would like it. Then I hiked out to the harbor lighthouse. When I came back to the hotel,

I went to the whirlpool room where I met up with the guys who are roofing the hotel. Had

a good conversation with them. This morning I met an interesting person, his name is

Warren Woodard, and he was celebrating his 80th birthday yesterday. His family was one of

the non indian families (white) that were moved off the Grand Portage indian reservation back

in the 1940's as part of a treaty. His family had lived in a little town called Mineral Center. It's

a town that doesn't exist any more except for the Cemetery. And you have to know where

the cemetery is to find it. Warren now lives in Oregon, and he was just here showing his

family the places he once lived.

Sometime today or tommorrow I will be hiking east from the Arrowhead Trail on the Border

Route.

Sunday, May 30 update:

I have completed the Border Route with day hikes on Friday and Saturday. I sang some

songs to celebrate during Saturday Night Karaoke at the Birch Terrace in Grand Marais.

I had clear sailing all the way back to Madison, except for the last mile on the Beltline

in Madison, where there was a huge traffic jam on Sunday Night.
