Course: BMET-435 Telemedicine and Medical Informatics with Lab

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the rapidly changing world of computer-assisted technology in medicine. It covers design and implementation of computer infrastructure as related to accessing medical database, visualization of medical techniques and the transfer & manipulation of medical data over wireless or wireline communication networks. The topics include TCP/IP protocols, internet security, networks, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard, genetic information and gene expression formats, Picture Archiving & Communication Systems (PACS), and Health Level 7 (HL7). Lab assignments include experimentation with local and wide area networks, computer assisted surgery software, medical image analysis hardware and software, database design, molecular biology techniques and wireless devices.

Prerequisite: BMET-321 and EET-301
