BEFORE THE CLEANUP
Register at the website. You will receive an email acknowledging your participation. You may also signify your interest to join by email: iccphilippines@gmail.com.
Look for a cleanup site. Check you local ICC Coordinator, such as, BLGU, City/Municipal Govt. (CENRO/PENRO), DENR and other government agencies, NGOs and other organizations on their announcements for the ICC Day event. You may inquire by email if there's a possible cleanup site available for you to join.
In Metro Manila, usual sites are Baywalk Dolomite Beach, Baseco Beach, Las Pinas Paranaque Wetland Park (LPPWP), SM by the Bay, J.W. Diokno Blvd Manila Bay area, CCP Bay Terminal and Harborview South (Ermita). If you’re planning to conduct a cleanup before or after ICC Day at Baywalk Dolomite Beach and LPPWP, contact respective DENR agencies managing the site.
You have the option to choose your own cleanup site. Invite friends, families and neighbours and do a group or small-scale cleanup in your neighbourhood, waterways, parks or riverside in coordination with the local barangay for hauling of collected trash.
Know about ICC. Visit the website to learn about the basic information about ICC and its mechanics. Become familiar with the Volunteer Ocean Trash Data Form, the different debris listed and proper recording. Learn how to make proper estimations like: 1 sack of debris = 6- 7 kg. ; 1 trash bag = 4.5 kg. and 1000 meters=1 kilometer
Attend orientation meeting. Join an orientation meeting to be given by your Group Coordinator to learn more about ICC, health and safety precautions and plans for the Cleanup.
Invite others to join you. Invite your friends, classmates, family and neighbours in the cleanup to make it more enjoyable and meaningful.
Prepare the following for ICC Day:
Face masks, rubber gloves; rice/potato/onion sacks, net bags or old pails; Volunteer Ocean Trash Data Form, ballpens or pencils, hat/cap, alcohol or hand sanitizer
If available, grabbers or tongs. long stick with hook, wire scoop nets (ideal when tide is high)
Food and water
Know the proper attire.
Preferably long pants and long sleeves shirt or any t-shirt with your school/organization logo and color; rubber shoes or any closed shoes, hat or cap
Wear face mask and gloves
Advisories on cancellation and reset date. Cancellation of ICC Day and rescheduling will be upon the discretion of the local Area or Site Coordinator. For Metro Manila, advisories will be posted at the facebook page or at the website of ICC Philippines.
ICC DAY
Be at the site by 6AM. You should be at the cleanup site by 6 am or earlier, depending on the schedule given by the Site Coordinator. Pre-registered individuals/group can proceed to the specified Registration Area to check on assigned cleanup area and to get their ICC materials. Walk-ins have to register and will be directed to his/her cleanup area.
Observe order during the kick-off ceremony.
SAFETY FIRST is the number 1 rule for all volunteers before proceeding to the cleanup area. Watch out for sharp and pointed objects, as well as slippery surfaces. Participating children should be tightly observed.
Apply knowledge on trash collection and data recording. Remember what debris to record, use of tick-marks when counting debris items, use of numbers for the total count and proper estimations. DON'T RECORD natural items, such as, bamboos, coconut husk, driftwood, seaweed, & water lilies. You may collect and clear them out of the shoreline. Report to your coordinator any dead or entangled wildlife. If possible, segregate recyclable items, such as, beverage bottles, water bottles and beverage cans. Use a separate data form when recording trash for underwater and watercraft cleanup.
IMPORTANT TIPS ON TRASH COLLECTION AND RECORDING:
Group yourselves into pairs - one to collect and the other to record the trash. Collect only the debris you can count and carry. Use a net bag, potato or onion sack or a 25-kilo rice sack. Do the segregation and recording in a shaded area, safe and far from the water or waves. Use numbers, not words for the total count of each debris item. Determine weight of sacks/bags using a scale or make estimations (i.e., 1 filled sack =7 kilos; 1 filled trash bag = 4.5 kilos).
Dispose trash bags properly. After recording, return trash back into the sack or bag. If your bag is only half-filled, transfer other trash to fill it. Be sure filled sacks are brought to the hauling area.
Review and submit your Data Form. Go over the Ocean Trash Data Form. Check for missing information (i.e., name of school and coordinator, site name and location, weight of trash, number of bags, distance covered, etc.) and trash items are properly tallied, totals are in numbers not words, etc.) Every detail of data is important. After checking, submit your data form to your Group Coordinator. If you were not able to submit on ICC Day, take a snapshot of the form (front and back) and email it to ICC Philippines.
Take as many photos as you can. Document your cleanup event by taking photos and videos which you can share with family and friends. Please also send some photos with higher resolution (>1 MB) to ICC Philippines by email or google drive.
