Group Coordinators or Team Leaders are responsible for organizing and orienting members on the basic information on ICC and its mechanics and plans for ICC Day. They are tasked to attend meeting/s called for by the Site Coordinator for orientation and event update. On Cleanup Day, they are responsible for the safety of members on-site; overseeing collection, sorting and hauling of trash and checking accomplished data forms for missing information, among others.
BEFORE THE CLEANUP
Register at the website. You will receive an email acknowledging your participation. You may also signify your interest to join by email: iccphilippines@gmail.com.
Look for a cleanup site. Inquire from a local ICC Coordinator, such as, Barangay LGU, City/Municipal Govt., DENR/CENRO/PENRO, NGOs, socio-civic groups, and other organizations who will be participating on ICC Day. You may inquire ICC Philippines by email if there's a possible cleanup site available for you to join or check the website for cleanup sites posted.
For Metro Manila cleanup sites, such as, Baseco Beach and SM by the Bay, a registration link will be available at the Facebook page: Department of Public Services- City of Manila (https://www.facebook.com/DPSmanilacity/) and SM by the Bay (https://www.facebook.com/smbythebay/).
You also have the option to choose a site and organize your own cleanup. You don’t have to go far but cleanup in your community, schools, homes, businesses and work surroundings matters a lot since marine debris originates from land.
Prior to any cleanup activity, you might need to notify or coordinate with the local Barangay or LGU especially, when conducting cleanup on public areas such as, beaches, rivers and parks. This is to ensure your safety and likewise and possible assistance in the hauling of trash collected.
If you’re planning to conduct a cleanup before or after ICC Day, you have to look for your own site and contact the local Barangay or LGU covering the area for possible assistance.
Orient your volunteers. Know the basic information about ICC and its mechanics through the website. Powerpoint presentations and videos are available at the website. Emphasize the importance of trash data recording and safety during the cleanup.
Prepare the following for ICC Day:
Trash bags: rice sacks, onion/potato sacks, net bags or old pails
Volunteer Ocean Trash Data Form, ballpens/ pencils
If available: grabbers or tongs, long stick with hook, wire scoop nets (ideal when tide is high)
Facemasks, rubber gloves; alcohol or hand sanitizer
Food and water
Hat, cap or bandana
Remind volunteers on proper attire. Preferably with facemasks and gloves on, long pants and long sleeves shirt or t-shirt with your logo or color; rubber shoes or any closed shoes; hat or cap
Advisories on cancellation and reset date. Cancellation of ICC Day and rescheduling will be upon the discretion of the local Area or Site Coordinator. For Metro Manila, advisories will be posted at the facebook page or website of ICC Philippines.
ICC DAY
Be at the cleanup site by 6:00 AM. Your group should be at the cleanup site by 6 am or earlier, depending on the schedule given by the Site Coordinator. Pre-registered group can proceed to the specified Registration Area to check on their assigned cleanup area and to get their ICC materials. Walk-ins have to register and will be directed to their cleanup area.
Observe order during the kick-off ceremony. Make sure your group is in one place and in proper behaviour.
Check and remind your group. Before proceeding to the cleanup area, check volunteers for proper cleanup attire (face masks and gloves on). Remind SAFETY - to watch out for sharp and pointed objects, slippery surfaces and hazardous debris. Group volunteers into teams with 3-5 members. One member of the team will be in charge of data recording, others to collect. Remind them to collect trash they can carry and count, not to collect natural items, such as, coconut husk, driftwood, seaweed, & water lilies and to report to you any dead or entangled wildlife.
Oversee collecting, sorting and disposal of trash.
Do the segregation and recording in a shaded area, safe and far from the water or waves. Check if trash items collected are properly segregated and recorded.
Remind them to return recorded trash back into the sack. Determine weight using a scale or estimations (i.e., 1 filled sack=7 kilos or 1 filled trash bag=4.5 kilos). Determine its weight using a scale or estimations (i.e., 1 sack of trash=7 kg).
Be sure filled sacks are brought to the hauling area.
Summarize group data. Summarize all data collected by your group into the Coordinator Ocean Trash Data Form or into one Volunteer Ocean Trash Data Form. Use a separate sheet for underwater and watercraft data. Before submission, make sure there is no missing information, such as, name of school and coordinator, cleanup site name and location, nearest landmark, total no. of people, weight of trash bags, number of bags, distance cleaned (in meters), etc. because every detail of data is important.
Submission of data results. Submit your Coordinator Ocean Trash Data Form or summarized Volunteers Data Form to the Site Coordinator. It is required that you provide a copy of the accomplished form to ICC Philippines by taking a mobile snapshot of the form (front and back pages) and email to: iccphilippines@gmail.com for quick monitoring of results and to ensure your data reaches us.
Take as many photos as you can. Document your cleanup event by taking pictures/videos which you can share with family and friends. Please also share or send some of them to ICC Philippines by email together with your trash data result.
