GMO

What is it

  • The process of altering food with bacteria, enzymes, and viruses to alter the its DNA. Kind of like programming a computer.

How it is used

  • Many fruits and vegetables have been genetically altered so that they can be resistant to the cold, increased crop production, and resistant to pest.

  • On a farm the longer a farmer can harvest a certain fruit or vegetable, the more he can sell. By making fruit and vegetables resistant to the cold they make their growing seasons longer. As our population continues to grow, longer growing seasons are necessary.

  • The more produce a farmer can get from one plant, the more he can sell. If every plant gives two times more produce, the whole field can make twice or more as much produce.

  • The most important factor for plant is to be resistant to pest. Pest can destroy a whole field literally overnight. For many years there was not an efficient way to deal with them. Now scientist can input a certain bacteria into a plant, so that when a pest eats any part of the plant it dies. Overtime the bugs will learn not to eat the plant at a

How it connects with Biotechnology

  • To be able to add bacteria to plants DNA, they must first find both of these DNA. This involves studying how the bacteria DNA and the plants DNA interact with each other. Then seeing what combination is necessary to create the effect they want. The process of studying and manipulating biomolecular process is an example of biotechnology.
