DNA Finger Printing

What is it

  • The process of cross matching two strands of DNA, then making a chart with the pattern of the DNA. Literally like a finger print of DNA.

How it is used

  • DNA finger printing is used to solve crimes. When evidence is left at the scene of a crime, detectives compare that evidence to those of the suspects. If the pattern of the evidence is exactly the same as their suspect they know that person was in that area. Since no two peoples DNA is exactly the same this method is very accurate and is used often.

  • Another major use is paternity test. DNA samples are taken from the father, mother, and the child, these samples are then compared to each other. The people who do these test look at both parents DNA and the child to see the similarities in the patterns. They then can tell the percenatge of how similarvthe DNA patterns are to one another.

What it has to do with Biotechnology

  • The process used to get to the DNA is an example of biotechnology. Before they can graph the DNA and compare it they have to break down many barriers. Also the study bio molecular process, which includes but isn't limited to DNA is biotechnology.
