Sargant, Chance and Lucas Families

Laura Sargant

William Septimus Harding married Laura Sargant.

Family trees showing Laura Sargant's ancestors, siblings and their descendants are shown in the linked here file Sargant Family Tree Vert and Text.xlsx Along the bottom, click on "Sargant Family Tree Text".

They are quite a challenge to download successfully and they contain a very large amount of content the accuracy of which must be uncertain! Here is how to unload it. Click on either of the attachments which will bring up what appears to be a small file. Click on the 3 dots (probably at the top right) and then on Download. That should show an Excel file at the bottom of the screen which you should click on. The Excel that file that comes up will either be the vertical or horizontal family tree. Some scrolling may be needed to find them (or start by Control-Home). The vertical and horizontal trees are two different pages on the same Excel file.

Detailed Family Tree etc re the Sargant, Chance and Lucas families

Sargants, Chances and Lucases are all thought to be Birmingham based. Probably all originally smallholder farmers who benefitted from the Industrial Revolution. Sargants were also manufacturers ---one probate reads as though of toys and swords (?), and may have had an involvement with B.S.A ie Birmingham Small Arms.

Some of what is contained below is from a limited edition book published in 1892 “CHANCE Of Bromsgrove and of Birmingham and the allied families of LUCAS AND HOMER” by James Frederick Chance (referred to below as “the Chance book"). We also have two notebooks kept by Laura Harding, nee Sargant, one described as a "birthday book" and the other saying it describes events.

William Septimus Harding married Laura Sargant whose pedigree included-

Laura's earliest ancestor known to us is her great-great grandfather William Sargant “of King’s Norton” (see p59 of Chance book). His wife was Mary per his will. According to the Chance book, the family had been prominent in the King’s Norton area (a suburb of Birmingham) for some time. It seems to be a co-incidence that five generations later, Prof. Philip Sargant Florence bought a large house (Highfield) in King’s Norton where he was host to a number of notable people including Louis MacNeice the Irish poet and playwright who rented a flat in the grounds.

William of Kings Norton had three sons, the first of whom, also William, is described in his father’s will as having disappeared. It is not known whether he ever reappeared and was therefore able to benefit from the will. The 3rd son was Thomas about which nothing is known. The 2nd son was Isaac Sargant (Laura's great grandfather), one of whose sons (or his only son or grandson as there is some evidence of an intermediate generation) was William Sargant 1769-1821 (Laura's grandfather) whose tree follows.

Sir Brian Horrocks 1895-1985.

Married the granddaughter of Laura Sargant’s sister. In his time he was well known as a military historian with a particular talent for explaining military history on television. He was also Black Rod ie an important official responsible for administering the House of Lords. His short biography on Wikipedia shows him to have had an interesting and adventurous life.

Frank Sargant or Uncle Willie was a renowned sculptor who studied and lived in Rome and London. In his will, he left a bequest “to The British School of Rome all my freehold property known as Nos. 1 and 2S Molletta Studios being 19 and 21 Cheyne Row Chelsea aforesaid and I request such School (but without ..) to use such property for the purpose of providing studios for students on their return from the School at Rome for limited periods to enable such students time to obtain studios for themselves. I give to the said school at Rome all my sculptures and works of art contained in my said studios absolutely it being my hope that the said School at Rome will be able to sell or otherwise dispose of them rather than that they should be disposed by a forced sale”

Walter Sargant

Headmaster of Oakham School who commissioned frescoes from his sister, Mary

Mary Sargant Florence 1857-1954.

Artist especially known for her frescoes. Suffragette and campaigner for women and peace. She was part of an artists colony in Marlow and built Lord’s Wood (see attachment) which is understood to have since lost some aspects of its charm as a result of the “improvements” made by later owners.

The eldest of William Sargant’s sons was a notable educationalist as indicated by the link. The internet also provides this poem he wrote

Lord Ilkeston 1840-1913.

Balthazar Walter Foster married Laura’s sister Emily Martha Sargant. He later became Sir Walter Foster and then the 1st Lord Ilkeston. Correspondence he had with Andrew Carnegie is described on the “Andrew Carnegie Connection” page. Ilkeston was a distinguished surgeon in Birmingham who became the MP for Chester and was then elevated to the House of Lords. His son, the 2nd Lord Ilkeston had no children so the Ilkeston title became extinct.

A brother of William Lucas Sargant was Thomas Sargant, several of whose children were prominent as shown below, including Edmund Beale, Sir Charles, Mary, Walter and Frank

William Lucas Sargant 1801-1889 or 99

was the father of Laura Sargant. He wrote a number of books as indicated here including “Economy of the Labouring Classes” and “Essays of a Birmingham Manufacturer”. He seems to have been an industrialist who took an interest in the working class from a benign viewpoint. His books are out of copyright and can be read via Google on screen. His entry in the Dictionary of National Biography is here

Wrote “Essays of a Birmingham Manufacturer”. “Economy of the Labouring Classes published in 1857 in London and shown as written in Birmingham. Also “the Science of Social Opulence”.

Son of Mary Sargant Florence and husband of Lella Secor. He wrote a number of books and lectured in America and England. He was an economist whose specialities included topics similar to those that had interested his great uncle William Lucas Harding who also lived in Birmingham. Like his wife, he was a political activist, supporting the Labour Party in Birmingham and Cambridge. His obituary is linked here. A description and picture of the family is on this link which is about Highfield. The family picture was actually taken at Lords Wood (not Highfield) and Noel should have been described as being to the left of Anthony. A member of the Sargant Florence family informs me that she believes there are several other inaccuracies on that site.

Lella Secor (wife of Philip Sargant Florence) 1887-1966

An American born to a humble family, she became a journalist who seems to have become an ardent campaigner for causes as a result of being sent in 1916 by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer to cover the voyage of the Henry Ford Peace ship which was sent to Europe to campaign against US involvement in the 1st World War. She turned from being a reporter to becoming a leading organiser in various peace and similar movements in the US. She continued throughout her life campaigning for peace, the rights of women and was a fervent advocate for the pill when, as the Chair of the Birmingham Family Planning Association without authority arranged for the pill to be tested, advertising for married women to volunteer as guinea pigs.

From 1929 until its demise, Highfield was the home of Prof. Philip Sargant Florence, Director of Social Studies at the University and Professor of Economics, with his wife Lella who 'had a charming smile, violent red hair and vitality,' according to MacNeice. She worked in Birmingham promoting family planning, and seems to have spent the 1930s using Highfield as the centre of Birmingham's “alternative Bloomsbury”

Daughter of Mary Sargant Florence. Married 1920 James Strachey 1887- 1967 who was assistant editor of the Spectator and the brother of Lytton Strachey. Members of the Bloomsbury Set. They were both psychoanalysts and translated Freud’s works into English. Photo in National Portrait Gallery here.

More on the Chance and Lucas Families

Chances, Lucases and Sargants were probably all Birmingham based, originally smallholder farmers who benefitted from the Industrial Revolution. Chance glassworks were well known. Lucas may have been the ones of that name that eventually made light bulbs. What follows is mainly from the Chance Book. The Chance book has now been scanned and the entire book can be found on this website.

It is also available from this link.
