Rev John Byng

Rev. John Byng married Charlotte Harding, daughter of William Tertius Harding. Three of his daughters married Hardings. He was minister at the Unitarian Chapel where many of the Harding children were baptised.

He was a Unitarian or Protestant dissenting minister. Details of the Unitarian Chapel at Coleshill, Tamworth and its ministers including John Byng were shown in a link no longer available, under Tamworth. He was minister from 1768 to 1827 (59 years) though from 1821 he appeared to share the job with the next minister. He died in 1827.

Charlotte's sister Mary (who married Joseph Paget) had three sons each of whom married John and Charlotte Byng's daughters. Thus, Joseph Paget married Anne Byng, Thomas Paget married Eliza Byng and William Paget married Mary Byng. See Peter Edden Tamworth Historian page.

There is also a reference to him marrying Mary (Charlotte's sister) on 16.6.1800. They are shown as having a son, also John, born 29.9.1807 and he as having a son, again called John, borne 15.4.1837.

Letters were received by William Septimus and his brother, Charles Harding, from Jane Allen saying that she was the servant of John (or Harry?) Byng who was living in penury and died about 3.5.1899. They seem to have contributed something to save him from the workhouse and then contribute to his funeral. Jane Allen said that he was the last of the Byngs and that she had worked for them for two generations etc.

Three of Jane Allen's rather sad letters are linked here.

There is a pencil note on the third letter saying that a postal order for £1 was sent. Other correspondence between the siblings suggested £15 on another occasion, split between William Septimus, Charles and their sister Annette.
