Grosvenor, Townsend, Pemberton, Ryland and Thompson

Introduction

William Quintus Harding married Rebecca Pemberton in 1800. Rebecca was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Pemberton. Mary was the daughter of William Grosvenor of Market Drayton and his 2nd wife Mary Townsend. Another daughter was Anne Pemberton who married 8.3.1808 Samuel Ryland. Anne’s 1st cousin was Elizabeth Ryland who married Joseph Priestley, son of the influential preacher Rev Joseph Priestley. Frederick Ryland married Clara Chamberlain, sister of Joseph and therefore aunt of Arthur and Neville Chamberlain.

Sources of information include Burkes Landed Gentry under “Ryland of Bearley and Sherborne” and a handwritten document headed “The Genealogy of the ancient Family of the Grosvenors of Hulme, Eaton, Bellaport and Brand from 1587”

Italics indicates further information may be available on another tree

Grosvenor

There is a mass of information, not always consistent, about this family going back some 20 generations before Mary Grosvenor who was Mrs William Quintus Harding’s mother. This is an attempt to summarise it in relation to Townsends, Pembertons, Rylands, Priestleys and Hardings. More detail can be found under “Grosvenor Pedigree detail” at the end of this page.

Gilbert le Grosvenor, nephew of Henry Lupus, Earl of Chester

About 8 generations on, the head of a part of the family was:

Duke of Westminster

Grosvenor being the family name of the Duke of Westminster (whose main claim to fame seems to be that the current duke – Gerald Grosvenor - is the richest person in the UK), it seems likely that there is a distant connection. This seems to exist but it is necessary to go to the 10th generation above Mary Grosvenor (mother of the wife of Quintus Harding) to find the first common ancestor. This is Sir Thomas Grosvenor, Lord of Hulme whose 1st son, Robert, only had daughters but his 2nd son, Ralph (or Rawlin) is shown on trees as “from this Ralph descends the Marquis of Westminster”. Sir Thomas’s 3rd son is shown as Thomas from whom Mary Pemberton nee Grosvenor was descended. If this is roughly correct, it would mean that eg Nicholas John Harding and the Duke of Westminster would very roughly be 15th cousins - along with several thousand others!

She said that she could find no mention of a Samuel Pemberton but referred to Richard Pemberton as being Mary Grosvenor’s husband and father of daughters who married Mr Ryland and Mr Riddlesden so there seems to be some confusion as to whether Richard or Samuel is the right name.)

2. Mary Townsend 26.10.1721-1787 [wrongly shown as 1821-1837 in one document) m William Grosvenor (John Grosvenor per Anna Newton’s letter) (see under Grosvenor) 26.3.1744. Anna Newton’s letter gave John Grosvenor as Mary Townsend’s husband. 5 sons 4 dau (a)-(b).

Mary was our grandmothers name and the statement that she had a daughter who married Ryland seems odd.
