Tusks

First published in Spring: The Journal of the E. E. Cummings Society #7, October 1998, page 93.

                                 Why did Cummings

                                                                        have this thing for elephants?

                        Was it something about

                                                                        the length of the nose

                                 the size of the ears

or the bulk of their persuasion?

                                 Why did Cummings

                                                                        have this thing for elephants?

   Did he somehow need something

                                                                        to feel smaller than

                                    a belief that tusks

                                                                        are more valuable than ivory?
