Bits &Pieces GNN ‘62

Issue #8, November 2009 ~ April 2010

FROM Carol Friedman Greener

I am living a wonderful life splitting my time between Fort Lee, NJ and Wellington, Fla (Wycliffe Country Club). I have 2 wonderful grandsons Ryan aged 5 and Brett aged 3. I am fortunate to be very close with my family and thank my lucky stars for all that I have. If anyone in Florida would like to get together, email me. I would love to reconnect with some of my old classmates.

FROM Steve Disman

Thought I’d give a quick update. Lived in Germany nearly 30 years, Berlin the last 7. Been retired for nearly 10 years. Spend a lot of time sailing. Visited 23 countries in the Baltic, North Sea, Black Sea, and Mediterranean with our sailboat. Will be in Orlando visiting grandsons over Christmas and later in Las Vegas to spend time with my mother. One of these days hope to get back for one of the reunions. Keep them coming. Unfortunately won’t be having turkey today, just fish.

FROM Edward Gingold

In June 2009, I traveled to Portland, Oregon to attend National Low Income Energy Consortium (NLIEC) annual conference. I represent my agency the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on the Board of Directors of NLIEC. My first evening in Oregon, I had dinner with Allan Arlow. Allan is quite a prominent figure in legal circles. He is a judge with the Oregon Public Utility Commission and the Bonneville Power Administration. Allan and I had not seen each other in 47 years. We had a delightful time catching up on our respective lives over the years.

Hello:

As I am sure you all know, North High School has developed and maintained a superlative standard in music education. (Check out our activities at the GNPS webpage) Some of you may have even been participants in the music program. As you also know times are tough now, economically, even in Great Neck.

A little over a year ago, we began an initiative to refurbish the "grandes dames" pianos in our school. After significant research, it was determined that restoration of "prime era" Steinway instruments was preferable to replacement with newer, inferior instruments, and so in June of 2009 the first piano - the original North High 1928 Steinway concert grand, in an unfortunate, sadly deteriorated state, was sent out for a complete restoration. The costs for this are to be borne by the Music Boosters association, supplemented by an activities fund surplus. We anticipate the return of that instrument in about a year, with an expected lifetime of an additional 100 years!!

The other pianos, one from the 1940's and the other from the ‘70s - our current workhorses - are also in dire need of attention, and were originally scheduled for repair as part of a capital improvement plan. Current budget restraints will push that off for many years as other priorities take precedence. In the meantime, it means that classes and student activities are serviced with inferior instruments. Ongoing maintenance and continual tuning (due to split pinblocks and prior "quick fix" repairs) costs us thousands each year, sucking valuable resources from other areas of the program.

Students, Faculty and Parents have worked diligently to promote the cause, and we have made progress, but we need additional help.

We thought that if everyone who had gone through the school, especially anyone who had participated in the music program, either in the band, the orchestra or the chorus, or as part of Junior Players, or who simply enjoyed music could donate the equivalent of a Starbucks coffee (and/or muffin) we would create a fund that would help maintain a program that has done so much for so many. Of course, if you would like to donate more, we would be very appreciative.

If you feel you can help us in this endeavor, please write a check to: North High Music Boosters, and send it to -

Thank you.

50th Reunion

Many of you have written to inquire about our 50th reunion, which will be in 2012…. Though we could do it in the style of our 40th and have it in the year of the 50th, which would be fall 2011 (if my math is correct),…. Therefore, if you are now thoroughly confused by those numbers as I am (50 boggles the mind!), I suppose it is never too early to start planning such a momentous event.

We will need a committee and I will be happy to be an advisor (Mr. Gabia, where are you?)! We also need a venue.

Please let me know if you would like to be on the planning committee and suggest a city for the event. Several people have said that they do not think it necessarily needs to be in Great Neck.

I will post the findings of this query.
