A "Captive Portal" is the term given to a system which intercepts web requests from new users and redirects these away from the requested website to an internal login or splash page.
So when siging on to a MeshAP using a wireless client, you will not be able to get any internet access until you try to browse the web. The first site you visit will initially be replaced by a login page or a page which is a terms and conditions or sponsors page.
An action is required by the user, either supplying user credentials or clicking a "continue" button before the real requested website is then delivered to the user. After authentication no further interaction is required with the captive portal until the user disconnects or the captive portal closes again after a time limit.
The LocustWorld captive portal is controlled via a web system where passwords can be supplied. Many other options for configuration are also within the web management system at Wiana. The captive portal can also be disabled.
