Alexander Calder was known as one of the greatest American sculptors. He was born in the city of Philadelphia in the year 1898. He was known for his large non-representational sculptures called stabiels and he invented the kinetic pieces call mobiles. His father and grandfather were sculptors. He studied mechanical engineering at the Steven’s Institute of Technology and was able to use this knowledge in his work. One of his most famous pieces is a wire circus. He died in 1976.
