GI jOE is a registered trademark of HASBRO. The entire series started in 1964 with a release of 12" articulated action figures. The initial product offering represented a line of action figures representing four of the branches of the U.S. armed forces with the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), Action Marine (U.S.Marine Corps). These and all other GI jOE names are registered trademarks of HASBRO.
The term G.I., in popular usage, stands for "Government Issue" and after the First World War became a generic term for U.S. soldiers.
The conventional marketing wisdom of the early 1960s was that boys would not play with dolls. The development of GI jOE led to the coining of the term "action figure". The word "doll" was never used by HASBRO or anyone involved in the development or marketing of GI jOE, "Action Figure" was the only acceptable term. It has since become the generic description for any poseable toy intended for boys.
"America's movable fighting man" is a registered trademark of HASBRO, and was prominently displayed on every boxed figure package.
I received my first GI jOE for Christmas in 1966 and continued to follow GI jOE in the 1970's with the lifelike hair and beard and even later GI jOE with Kung-Fu grip.
When I was growing up, my brothers and our friends had our GI jOEs on a great missions of adventure of some kind or another. Battling the forces of evil and rescuing those in trouble.
When I eventually had children of my own, I purchased the re-booted to 12-inch size, GI jOE Hall of Fame action figures for them. My three sons, and I had great fun with the action figures going out on new missions of adventure. Now they have grown up and have put away their various action figures, but I have a small collection of my favourites.
