The "Sabotage" accessory set (code no.7516) was released in 1967. It was indicated as being for the GI jOE ACTION SOLDIER in particular, although any of the 11-1/2" Joes could be used with it. In later years ,"Sabotage" would become the "Secret Mission to Spy Island".
In the "America's Moveable Fighting Man" comic, G.I. jOE ACTION SOLDIER reports for duty and is given a mission to lead a squad and sabotage important communications or other installations at enemy headquarters.
The Sabotage set includes:
- life raft (black inflatable with four oar loops grey anchor and white tow rope);
- oar (black with yellow tip and grip);
-binoculars (red with elastic strap);
- signal light (black with yellow paper sticker for the signal light lens);
- flare gun (grey with brown grip);
- detonator (grey with brown vinyl strap);
- TNT (three orange dynamite sticks);
- stocking cap (black material knit watch cap);
- radio set (jade green wireless radio with code keypad and headphones );
- gas mask (green with silver connector piece, orange hose and green filter canister);
- cal .45 sub-machine gun ( gold and silver M-3A1 Grease gun with black elastic sling).
NOTE: Action Soldier window box sets also included the GI jOE Army Manual (FM75-00).
I originally thought this set would have been for the Action Sailor. Since the window box art features a submarine in the background, it suggested to me that this was a Navy mission not an Army mission.
Since the set did not come with an outfit, you would have to supply your own uniform. The box artwork seems to show GI jOE wearing a light blue shirt and grey V-neck sweater and dark pants. Some kids would use the olive drab green fatigues that came with the Action Soldier. Maybe others would opt for a camouflage uniform and obtain the Action Marine camouflage fatigue shirt (code no. 1744) and pants (code no. 7715) .
Also I don't see a wire roll for the detonator and TNT, so people may have added one from the 1964 Action Soldier ~ Command Post Field Radio & Telephone (code no. 7520) set to their SABOTAGE set.
GIj OEAction Soldier ~ Command Post Field Radio & Telephone accessory (code no. 7520)
This simple accessory pack consisted of items G.I. jOE might need in the field to stay in touch with headquarters (HQ).
The set contained:
- green field radio backpack;
- brown field telephone;
- green roll with copper wire;
- paper map and silver map case with black text, "MAPS".
In 1968, the Sabotage set was repackaged with a photo box and retained the same code no. 7516. Even though this set was labelled for the Action Soldier, the photo featured commandos wearing Marine camouflage fatigues. Since this set did not come with an outfit, most kids would pick the Action Marine camo fatigue shirt (code no. 1744) and pants (code no. 7715) copying what they saw on the photo box to use for their GI jOE. Also this photo box set did not include a wire roll for the detonator and TNT.
