The inhabitants of this planet are the descendants of retros, people who believe that nanites and augmentation are a step too far away from humanity. Without nanites, their tech is retro (hence the moniker) well above modern levels but primitive by galactic standards. By galactic law, augments must not reveal themselves to retros.
The local religion is a corruption of Exilism, a belief that the human race was exiled from Earth for the sin of augmentation. However, the locals don’t understand or know about augmentation, and Earth is little more than a collection of myths. Their beliefs:
They are descendants of the Exiles, people who fled Hell and the rule of Mallif.
Earth is spoken of like a heaven or paradise that was corrupted by Mallif, turning it into Hell.
Mallif, Lord of Darkness and the King of Lies, is the source of all evil. He tempts people to devour their souls and turns them into demons, soulless immortals of darkness that devour the souls and flesh of their victims.
Seraphin and Valkyries - servants of Earth who guided the Exiles out of Hell - they watch over the Exiles and smite the wicked.
Watchers: priest-like figures who preach virtues of the soul, that many forms of sex is wicked (homosexuality, group sex, and any other sex outside of marriage, except with a paid prostitute), and assist in wards to protect the people from Mallif and his demons. Also assists with cleansings. They are also the “techs” of Abidon, with an intimate knowledge of all tech used there. Any tech beyond their knowledge is considered corruption from Mallif.
The Borja - the holy book of the watchers, this datafile (in a flexible reader) outlines their beliefs, the laws of their religion, and all technical schematics and acceptable knowledge as well as vague descriptions of “the corruptions of Mallif and the soulless.”
The Word - common form of the Borja that is widely distributed to the rest of the population. Technical schematics and secrets of the watchers are missing, aside from a list of forbidden research (essentially the building blocks of nanite tech).
Witch-hunts are common, and the strange or outcast live in fear of “cleansing,” a ritual that entails the forced drinking of highly corrosive acid in a "witch-pen," a metal enclosure over a pit so onlookers can watch. A bladder containing the acid is strapped into their mouths, the watcher rebukes the lies of Mallif, then squeezes the contents down their throats. Takes a few minutes to die, much of the victim liquefies and slides into the pit, leaving the upper body (minus the front throat and lower jaw). This is typically then left to rot until the next cleansing, when the body’s dumped in the pit to be dissolved by the next one. Has an acrid stench if used within one month.
Abidonians use a currency regulated and mandated by the Watchers, based on the value of precious metals. These commonly take the form of coinage, roughly the dimensions of an old American penny, named after the ranking of the Watcher order (an osmium-based currency, where osmium has the highest value of any metal on Abidon).
Pious: made of 10g of pure osmium, stamped with the watcher symbol for Pious (the highest rank), etched in gold. This coin is slightly bigger than all others.
Elders: made of 8g of pure platinum, stamped with the watcher symbol for Elder (etched in gold). Fifty elders equal one pious.
Artificers: made of 7g of pure gold, stamped with the watcher symbol for Artificer. Five artificers equal one elder.
Servants: made of 4g of pure silver, stamped with the watcher symbol for Servant. Five servants equal one artificer.
Applicants: made of 3g of pure copper, stamped with the watcher symbol for Applicant. The lowest form of currency, Fifty applicants equal one servant.
