WILLIAM MASON born 1822 in Fareham, Hampshire &
CHARLOTTE VINCENT born c1815 in London, Middlesex
William Mason was born in May 1822 at Fareham, Hampshire near Portsmouth. The son of George Mason, a Blacksmith by trade and Mary. He was baptised on the 19th May 1822 at the church of St Peter & St Paul in Fareham.
In 1841 William is living on the High Street, Fareham with his parents and brother Charles and four sisters, Mary, Sarah, Hannah and Ellen. This is shortly before his marriage to Charlotte.
On the 3rd October 1841 he married Charlotte Stone at the parish church, Portsmouth. Charlotte's maiden name was Vincent. Charlotte Vincent is the first Londoner in my family tree, she was born in the city of London around 1815. Her father Thomas was a Shipwright.
Charlotte's first marriage was to a William Stone, they married on the 5th September 1830 at St Pauls, Poole and had three children. William Thomas, a son in 1832, George Augustus, in 1834 and a daughter called Marinia in 1836, they were living at Poole at the time. Marinia or Marianne was baptised on the 15th August 1836. Unfortunately Charlotte's husband William Stone dies shortly afterwards leaving her alone to try and support her children. To make ends meet she had to work in one of the mills in the area, in the 1841 Census she is noted as a F.S. (Female Servant) and working at Horry Mill, Winkleigh, Torrington, Devon. All the children had to be left at the Union Workhouse at Poole as Charlotte could not afford to look after them at the time.
It must have been a great relief to have met and then marry William Mason. On the 3rd October 1841 she married William at the parish church, Portsmouth, changing her name from Charlotte Stone to Mason.
On the 1851 Census William is listed on the Cams Estate, William is working as a Groom for the Delme Family. You can see a picture of the Cams Estate at the top of the page. For many centuries this was one of Fareham's most stately residences and a manor house is recorded at Cams Hall as far back as the 13th Century. In the early 18th Century a new building was created on the estate and in 1781 it was purchased by the Delme family. They moved across Fareham from Place House (now Titchfield Abbey) to occupy the mansion and then spent a small fortune on part-rebuilding and enlarging the house. This superb mansion was known locally as Cams Hall and remained in the hands of the Delme Family for over 100 years.
The Cams Estate has a superb setting, with outstanding views to Portsmouth Harbour and the approach is by an impressively long drive which in those days passed through extensive and immaculate grounds. Sadly the Delme family's male heirs died out and the last one decided to sell up. Montague Foster bought the estate and rented it out to a number of tenants. It was sold again in 1895 and then had several owners, even being used by the Admiralty during the 2nd World War. During the 1950's a caravan park was started there and the land was farmed by the Hill family for a number of years. During this period the buildings fell into disrepair and the house became very dilapidated. When a new owner was killed in a plane crash, Strand Harbour Securities took over the estate and an extensive period of renovation took place. Currently the Cams Estate comprises a successful business park and a golf course.
Together William and Charlotte had at least seven children. The first, a daughter called Ann Jane Mason, she was baptised on the 2nd October 1842 at the church of St Peter & St Paul, Fareham but died quite young in 1850. The 2nd daughter was called Emma Mary Mason, baptised on the 27th October 1844. Then followed three boys, Edmound in 1845, Samuel in 1847 and William in 1849. Samuel Mason, my 3x grandparent was born on the 23rd Feb 1847 and baptised on the 14th March at St Peter & St Paul. Then they had a two further boys, Charles Thomas in 1852 and then James Henry, born in 1854.
In the 1851 Census Charlotte is aged 36 and her profession is simply noted as a Grooms wife. She is living with all her children on Jockey Hill, Fareham. William, her husband is on the same page but listed under the Cams Estate. Fortunately her children are now back with her and the rest of the family, but the stable family situation would again be shattered when William died. William Mason died on the 13th September 1855, he was aged just 36. From the death certificate it looks like there was an accident where he damaged his brain, maybe this was possibly connected to his occupation of working with horses at the Cams Estate.
Charlotte married for a 3rd time to Joseph Edward Hale/Heale, they married on the 30th October 1859 at St Mary church, Portsea. Joseph worked as a labourer and lived at 16 Clarence Street, Portsea. You can see the family together at this address in the 1861 Census, the children have changed their surname to Heale including Samuel, my 3x great grandfather, who is noted as Samuel M Heale, a Scholar. Charlotte passed away in the summer of 1863 and was buried at Portsea on the 3rd of July 1863. Joseph would go on to marry again in 1864 to a lady named Emma Cook.
