MARK MARKHAM born about 1786 in Northamptonshire
ANN HARBUTT born in Northamptonshire
In the 1786 the Monarch is George III, King of Great Britain & Ireland. The current Prime Minister is William Pitt the Younger, a Tory. In August the British cabinet approves the establishment of a penal colony at Botany Bay to serve as "a remedy for the evils likely to result from the late alarming and numerous increase of felons in this country and more particularly in the metropolis" i.e. London. On the 11th August Captain Francis Light acquires the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah on behalf of the British East India Company, renaming it Prince of Wales Island in honour of the heir to the British throne, this would be the first colony of the British Empire in Southeast Asia.
Mark Markham, my 4th great grandfather, was born around 1786 in Northamptonshire, possibly Wilbarston and he was a Shoemaker by trade. 1803 saw an increased demand for footwear because of the Napoleonic wars and by 1810 around 250,000 men in the British Army needed boots. Production was beginning to be mechanised, machines were adapted to making shoes and boots. By 1850 factories became centers of machinery and much of the outwork nature of shoemaking reduced or stopped altogether. The firm Clarkes still used limited outworkers until the 1870’s. Also around this time shoes which had been worn on either foot previously were now made as lefts and rights, resulting in a big improvement in comfort.
Mark married Ann Harbutt on the 15th March 1812 at Wilbarston and they went on to have at least 8 children. They were all baptised at the All Saints Church at Wilbarston. Their first child was a son called Thomas, baptised in 1814, then a daughter, Mary, baptised in 1817. Next they had 3 boys, John in 1818, William in 1821 and then Joseph in 1822. Their next two children were called Sarah, I presume the first died very young although i have not found any record as of yet. The next child was a daughter called Elizabeth, born in 1830, She is my 3x grandmother and went on to marry Thomas Almond in 1851 at All Saints Church in Leicester.
Mark is living with his children Mary, Elizabeth and Joseph in the 1841 Census. He is noted as being a shoemaker. There is also another Mary living with the family, aged 65. Unfortunately the 1841 Census does not tell me the relationship to Mark, is Ann his wife also known as Mary ? . Mark passed away at the start of February 1845 and is buried at Wilbarston on the 16th February 1845.
