Amos Almond 1806 & Jane Bennet 1799
Amos Almond
~ Cowkeeper & Dairyman of Leicester
&
~Jane Bennet of Uppingham. Rutland
AMOS ALMOND born 13 July 1806 in Great Easton, Leicestershire &
JANE BENNET born c1799 in Uppingham, Rutland.
Amos Almond was born on the 13th of July 1806 in Great Easton, Leicestershire. He was baptised on the 24th September 1806, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Almond.
He married Jane Bennet who was born around 1799 in Uppingham, Rutland. They married in 1825 at Caldecott parish church in Rutland which is the next villiage to Great Easton and located about 4 miles south of Uppingham, Caldecott is the most southerly village in Rutland, just inside the county boundary. The church of St John the Evangelist where they were married stands on Church Road in the village.
Rutland is England's smallest county and was absorbed into Leicestershire for a time in 1974 but was reinstated as a county in 1997 after the residents voted to leave and become autonomous. It projects a rather up market image and is presently is the only county not to have a McDonalds, Burger King or KFC fast food chain. Rutland Water is the UK's largest man made lake, similar in size to Lake Windermere in the Lake District and originally called Empingham Reservoir. Both the village of Nether Hambleton and Middle Hambleton were cleared and flooded when the reservoir was created, the church being the only building saved and can be still seen on the edge of the lake. In Rutland all horseshoes must be hung with their tips at the bottom, it is said that one of the reasons for this is that the devil cannot make a nest in the bottom of the horseshoe and so that luck falls from the horseshoe and is bestowed on those that walk beneath it.
Amos's first child was called Mary, born around 1820, I am not sure if her mother is Jane as they married later on the 31st Oct 1825 in Caldecott and I haven't found a baptism record for Mary as of yet, but certainly together they had another four children, Eliza, Thomas, Emily and Maria.
They moved to the centre of Leicester to seek employment and In 1841 Amos was working as a agriculture labourer and living at Junior Street, Leicester in the parish of All Saints, his wife with his children are at the same location. By 1851 Amos and his family have moved to Vauxhall Street, Amos is still labouring but they have employed a live in servant called Elizabeth Markham, she later marries their son Thomas.
In 1861 Amos is now employed as a Dairyman and so is obviously keeping his herd of cows to be milked, they are employing a Dairyboy to help out too. In the 1871 Census he is noted as a Cow Keeper, he and Jane are also now looking after their grandchildren Ellen and Joseph, who were the youngest children of Thomas, their son.
Later on in life he suffered from senile decay or dementia. At this time he was living with his daughter Eliza and her husband Thomas\George French who was an Engineer at Leicester & Rutland Asylum, In 1881 it was called Asylum Cottage and in 1891 it is referred to as the Engineers Cottage. Thomas or George French was Eliza's second marriage, she had married previously married Josiah Payne on the 23rd September 1844 when she was very young, this was at St Margarets, Leicester. On her second marriage Thomas is noted as George French at the time, they married on the 15th November 1857 at All Saints, Leicester. He is noted as George on Amos's death certificate as well but noted as Thomas on the Census.
Amos's wife Jane, died on the 7th July 1879 at home in the County Asylum Cottage, Leicester. The Asylum, built of grey brick in the late Georgian style and is now part of Leicester University. It was on Victoria Road, adjacent to the Victoria Park but now called University Road. You can see more details on the Asylum in the images link below. Amos passed away here on the 25th September 1891, aged 88 years, the Informant being one George French, his son-in-Law.
The early Victorian's placed a great importance on their funerals & death practices became more elaborate as the century progressed but towards the end of the 1800s this began to diminish but the Victorian section of Welford Road Cemetery is certainly very atmospheric and full of many ornate headstones. Although there is no headstone for Thomas & Jane at least they are both buried together in a plot in the consecrated section.
