Frederick Screaton
~ Frame work Knitter of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire
&
Ann Boulton
~ Frame work Knitter of Leicester
FREDERICK SCREATON born 1803 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire &
ANN BOULTON born 1812 in Leicester.
In 1803 the U.K. declares war on France after they fail to withdraw from Dutch territory instigating the Napoleonic Wars. Colonel Edward Despard and six others are hanged for their part in the Despard Plot which intended to assassinate King George III and seize key locations such as the Bank of England and Tower of London. They were originally sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered but the sentence was commuted to hanging and beheading. This was carried out on the gatehouse roof at Horsemonger Lane Gaol in London witnessed by a crowd of at least 20,000 people.
Frederick Screaton was born in 1803 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of William and Elizabeth Screaton. He married Ann Boulton on the 14th July 1828 at the All Saints Church, Leicester. Ann was born on the 5th of February 1812 in the St Margarets Parish of Leicester and was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Boulton. Frederick like many of my ancestors at this time worked as a Frame Work Knitter and would have no doubt moved to Leicester to produce and trade his garments. His death certificate notes him more specifically as a stocking maker.
Together they had 5 Children - Elizabeth, Eliza, Henry, Sarah and Ann. They can all be seen in the 1841 Census living at Green Lane, Leicester. Unfortunately Frederick's wife Ann died on the 15th May 1841, aged just 29, it is noted that she had been working as a Frame Work Knitter along with Frederick. Frederick re-married in 1850 to Lucy Whatton, this was on the 14th July, they were living at Wheat Street in Leicester at the time. The 1851 Census notes that they are living at number 67 with Fred's children Sarah, Henry and Harriet. Harriett who was born around 1843 is Lucy's daughter.
Wheat Street in Leicester used to a much longer street than it is now, all that is left now is a short street between two factories. The old houses were removed as part of the city's slum area clearance and in their place now stands the modern ring roads of Leicester city centre.
Frederick died on the 13th January 1871, aged 67 and is buried at Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, It appears that Lucy, Frederick's 2nd wife remarried again to a William Lewitt after Frederick's death in 1871. William, Lucy and daughter Harriett are are all living together in Belgrave in the 1881 and 1891 Census records. Lucy lived onto 1892 aged 70.
