spd-11_JSynthLib_tutorial

A little tutorial to get you started with the editor and librarian

1. Setting up the MIDI connections.

Select "Windows" >"Preferences" and ...

tab "MIDI" :

Select "Enable MIDI interface" and select the

virtual midi-cable like snd-virmidi (Linux) or MIDI-yoke (Windows).

(I'm not quite sure if this is really mandatory, YMMV)

If you have a midi controller, you can also select "Enable Master Controller input".

tab "Synth Driver" (this is the important step) :

Click on "Add device", scroll down to and open the "Roland" folder,

select the "Roland SPD11 Driver" and click "OK".

Make the "Device" column narrow and the "MIDI in port" column wide so

you can read the info about the available input ports from the selection box.

Make sure you select the virtual port that is connected

to your hardware MIDI port, that is connected to the SPD11.

The same counts for the output port, when it's done, hit "Apply" and "OK".

2. Create a library

Now to create a new library to work in, hit Ctrl+L or choose "Library" > "New library".

This will bring up a "New Library" window.

3. Request some data

Then to request a patch from the SPD11, hit Ctrl+G or choose "Patch" > "Get...".

This will bring up a "Get sysex data" dialog where you should see

Device: Roland SPD11 <SPD11> ... ,

Driver: Complete Patch-+

Bank: <empty>

Patch: Choose here from the list.

"Get" will request and receive the data.

"Paste" puts the data in the library and keeps the dialog open so you can request more data.

"Done" puts the last received data in the library and closes the dialog window.

"Cancel" is what it is ;-)

The other drivers also work, try them out and you will see ...

4. Edit the patch

Right-click on a saved patch in the library, choose "edit".

The upper 4 rows correspond to the upper 4 pads and the same for the lower rows.

Pads 1 to 8 are the internal pads, 9 to 16 are external pads (kick, hi-hat controller, extra pads).

All changes you make are sent to the SPD11, so if you want to keep the original, it's best to make a copy before editing.

Anyway, if you don't like your changes, you can still choose "Revert to original" when closing the editor window.

Have fun and share some drumkitsss !
