Clues For Conquering the Evil DBQ

Following these when approaching a DBQ assignment:

Step 1. Identify the Focus Words within the question

- Usually more than one focus word

- Physically i.d. the focus words: underline them, rewrite them at bottom, etc.

Step 2. Read the documents

- in the order given

- Physically i.d. the focus words: underline them, rewrite them at bottom, etc.

Step 3. Write the Essay

- Have a clear expanded thesis within a succinct introductory paragraph (required)!!!

- Do not simply restate the question; use info from the documents.

- Use and ANALYZE the information from the documents – DO NOT summarize

- Usually you can organize the essay with one paragraph per focus word.

- Use as many documents as possible (at least 6)

- Do not simply use the documents in the order they are given (a “laundry list:” this is the kiss of death)

- Group the documents together in ideas or categories dictated by the focus words

- Combine documents that have similar views or opinions

- Include and point out any contradictions and/or ambiguities between the documents

- Include any pertinent, outside information that strengthens your argument

- use quotes within your sentence structure, but sparingly (not whole sentences)

- Make reference to at least Four POINTS OF VIEW (motivation bias) of a document’s source.

A DBQ exercise is the equivalent of a 45 minute research paper with the research having been done for you. So, you USE the information to PROVE an argument. Imagine the process as being a trial. You, as a lawyer, must use evidence (documents) to prove a point and win your case.
