Make your own fuel!! How to turn waste paper in to fuel

Waste paper can in fact be made in to cheap and clean burning alternative fuel with simple technology. You can make your own fuel at home and save some bill.

The technology is called briquette making. Briquettes are made from variety of biomass materials such as municipal waste, leaves and grass,wood chips, agricultural byproducts such as husks,straw and so on. The main principles in briquette making are pressing the biomass materials so that its energy values per unit volume is high and preparing an insulated combustion chamber (on the fuel surface) that contributes to efficient burning. The later also helps them burn for longer time.

The technology is already applied in Addis Ababa by a group of people who used waste charcoal, which otherwise will be waste. Mixed with soil or clay to make it burn longer, one briquette lasts for 5hrs in household stoves. The photo below shows paper briquette i made while burning.

Design and development of biogas Mitad

Rationale

Injera baking is one of the most energy intensive cooking activities. In response to this, improved stove like Mirt has been introduced. However, we still need to cut trees. An innovative and sustainable alternative to this is the use of biogas. However, less is known about its application in Injera baking. Individuals have come with various designs of the burner system and bio-Metad (see figure 1).

The two burner designs on the left are some of the trials but the report [1] claims they have low performance as the gas doesn’t burn as required. This however could also be due to low gas pressure. The biogas Mitad on the right is developed by Selam Vocational training center [2].Similarly, the design is unable to attain uniform heat distribution and therefore bake good Injera.[3] Overall, there is a need for formal research despite the trivial causes of the problems.

Waste charcoal dust back to useful "charcoal"!!

This process is quite simple in formulation but plays role in reducing one component of municipal waste. The dust can be remade in useful charcoal like balls that together with appropriate additives stays quite long time. It only took me 10min to set it on fire! probably because of my skills with fire, but it burned well after that boiling 1lit water in 100gm of dust remade to charcoal. See the pics below which show the fire work!

Shown in the left is ash after the fire has died. It keeps it shape unlike the words of politicians! At the right, the charcoal balls burning making our life even more dependent on biomass? Not so for mass charcoal sellers!!
