January 7, 2009 Meeting Minutes
Jayne Pimlott welcomed attendees at 6:21 P.M. in the Hall of Fame room. There were several absences due to the concurrent Outdoor Science School parent meeting being held at ESMS.
WASC Chairman, Nancy Cobb, and Principal, Jim Garza reported the finished WASC report went online on 12/19/08. The visiting team chairman, Mrs. Schlegal, has scanned it and seemed very pleased. She noted we’re ‘very ahead’ of schedule for completing the report. She hasn’t received the names of her visiting team yet. The report will be mailed this week.
· A question raised: does a hard copy need to go to WASC at this point or later? Jim/Nancy to find out.
Nancy/Jim reviewed the parent feedback received at the 12/15/08 Focus Groups (see yellow chart.) Discussion ensued of need to familiarize parents of the process that has taken place to identify our Critical Academic Needs and what the report contains. Although most parent feedback was on point and positive, a few were items never brought up previously in Focus Groups. It’s important parents understand the process to show items may have been considered early in the process but weren’t top critical needs.
An informative flyer (pink flyer attached) was distributed which outlines the resources available at ESHS for drug awareness, education, intervention and prevention. Garza also explained procedures school administration takes when they receive information about suspected drug activities. The flyer was produced by the Intervention Counselor after a parent comment to the effect that ESHS is not aware of or concerned about the growing drug problem and not doing enough. In fact, there are numerous programs in place and the administration is very mindful and proactive to stop any problems. The administration welcomes parent input that might make their efforts more effective. It was discussed that the information of what is in place needs to be disseminated to parents. The flyer will be submitted to the Eagle Ears.
The Parent/Community Home Group will meet 2/4/09 to discuss the 3/1/09 WASC visit. It’s important that all members who will be participating in the visit attend the February meeting to familiarize themselves with the content of our WASC report.
