View at YouTube on CLC Library's Channel
Description:
This video was created to promote various ways students could get in touch with the library. It also shows how easy it is to access useful research sources from home. The video is used by librarians in the classroom, on Blackboard, and was displayed during Thrive student success events in 2010 - 2012. I developed this video using Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects.
Objectives:
The library was investing a significant portion of time and resources into several services including the website and live chat feature.
A feedback survey revealed that students were confused about what the library had to offer and most were completely unaware that website existed, or that it contains links to valid resources for their papers all accessible from home. Many saw the chat service as fluff and didn't understand why or how they could use it. The Were Here For You video was used to set a clear and consistent message wrapped up in bright colors, graphics that appeared to have been cut out of a magazine, and choppy transitions to help set an impression that the library is relevant and accessible to the younger generation of students.
A portion of the video was dedicated to promoting the many online resources available to students via the library website, including the live chat service. It was important to show students that they could do more than ask questions, they could also receive links directly into databases and articles that would help them with their research.
After the video was completed Librarians used it in their information sessions which created a complete and consistent message for all students regarding resources and services and subsequent live chat and library website statistics went up significantly in the following semesters.
Production Details:
The library did not have a marketing budget at the time this video was developed so I used my own point-and-shoot camera to shoot the live action portions and edited the footage with Premiere. The stills were created in Photoshop then combined with the video in Premiere with some post-production editing in After Effects. Near the end of the project one of the librarians requested the addition of the "Conan the Librarian" clip which I had to locate, trim, and insert. I also worked with the copyright expert on campus, contacted the original owner, and created a version of the video without the clip in the event of copyright claims.
