Description:
MSN students were compiling and submitting a physical portfolio of work at the culmination of their program of study as evidence of growth and accomplishments. This format was satisfactory for grading purposes but the final product was not easily shared with prospective employers and was inherently prone to loss and damage. The MSN program committee approached me to assist them with moving to an ePortfolio solution for the new cohort of students in preparation of phasing out the print portfolio. Google Sites was chosen from several available options and I adapted the student project information sheets and developed and delivered training sessions for students and faculty.
Objectives:
This project was planned outside of the traditional budget cycle so it was constrained to freely available tools or adapting a tool we already own. The faculty wanted to implement a tool that was easy to use and portable so that students could still access their portfolios after graduation.
Project Details:
I met with the MSN program committee to discuss their needs and requirements for the ePortfolios then did research on various solutions including Google Sites, Slideshare/PowerPoint, Weebly, Wordpress & Blogger, Issu, Moodle, and Live Binders. After weighing the pros and cons of each solution I narrowed the choices down to Google Sites, Wordpress, and Live Binders then met with the group again to discuss our options. My final recommendation was Google Sites, which the group agreed to support, and I moved forward with the rest of the project planning and implementation tasks.
I developed a PowerPoint presentation and visited classrooms to train students on the new ePortfolio requirements and the use of Google Sites. I also met with students for individual consultations on portfolio design and development with Google Sites.

Supplemental Projects:
I suggested that we support the ePortfolio development by making technology and training available to students for adding additional artifact types such as recording skills and simulation participation. I recommended the purchase of iPods and tripods and providing training so that students could record themselves performing skills practices or giving presentations in class. I anticipate this project will wrap up in February once all of the equipment has arrived and students have been trained.
