Unlike many classes, this class does not use an A-F grading system. It is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. The passing grade is equivalent to a ‘C’ or a 70% in classes that use the A-F system.
There are three grades for essays in the class:
R- an essay that receives an R needs to be Revised in order to pass the class. The student must continuing revising this essay until it receives either a B or a P
B- an essay that receives a B is Borderline. This essay may be good enough to pass through the final portfolio process, but it definitely needs more revision to make a passing grade certain. A student does not have to revise a B essay, but I highly recommend it.
P- an essay that receives a P is a Passing essay. This essay is ready to be placed in the final portfolio.
During the semester, you must do three things:
Meet the attendance requirements and other classroom expectations as outlined in this syllabus
Earn a B or P on all graded writing assignments and turn in all ungraded writing assignments
Complete at least 70% of prewriting assignments, such as D2L discussions, quizzes, peer response, short writings, and other activities as assigned
If you do these three things, then you will be able to submit your Final Portfolio to the 900 Final Portfolio Committee. If you fail to do the three things above, you will not have the opportunity to turn in a Final Portfolio and you will fail the class.
The 900 Final Portfolio Committee will then grade the Final Portfolio to determine whether you pass the class. Once your Final Portfolio has been turned in, I have no control over whether you pass the class or not.
So, to reiterate, passing this class requires that you pass both the class itself and that you produce a passing Final Portfolio. We will discuss this throughout the semester, and we will all work together to help folks produce passing Final Portfolios.
