Introduce D2L (30 min)

  • syllabus, course calendar, grades

  • the first reading "The Language of Responsibility"

  • introduce syllabus questions discussion; do it before 8 AM on Friday to earn a point, but only if you have a real question

Discuss reading strategies for school and practice (10 min)

Previewing-- skim the titles, subheadings, pictures, pull quotes, words in different fonts

Having a conversation with the writing

• Underlining/highlighting

Making meaning

• • What is the main idea of the writing?

  • What do you find confusing?

  • What do you find most interesting?

  • Where do you agree/disagree?

  • What questions do you have about the writing?

  • What connection does this have to your life?

Practice reading with the "The Language of Responsibility" (30 min)

• Read "The Language of Responsibility"

• Have a conversation with the writing as you read it

• Make meaning of the writing after you are done
